All good things ...

Well, I think it will come as a surprise to all of ZERO people that this will be my last blog post.

I know it sounds cliche, but it's not you, it's me. Really, it is.

I think we both know it's time to move on. You'll always be in love with the blogger I could be if I'd just write more often (or at all). I'll always feel inadequate as a blogger, especially when I know you read so many other funnier, more frequent bloggers.

You can still keep up with my exploits somewhat on my Flickr site, where I try to post pictures periodically. And I still write for Gig Matrix, which has a sleek new look and a feature called The High Five that we update weekly. So you should definitely check that out. (I even try to keep my profile there updated with what I've been watching and playing if that interests you, though I tend to doubt that it does.)

And there's always e-mail. I know, it seems so turn of the century, but I'll try to be better about using it to keep in touch. If you want my e-mail but don't have it, let me know and I'll get it to you.

I guess that's it. I thought I'd be more sentimental, but I think it's been so long since I've invested any time in this blog, saying goodbye is really just a formality. I hope you'll check out the other blogs and sites that I have links to. There's some good stuff there.

It's been fun, though. Seriously. Thanks to everyone who read the site, especially the people who were strangers but became friends.

I wish you all the best.

Sincerely,
Briguy

Well, hello again

So I'm still here.

I have, however, begun seriously considering giving up the blogging. I barely have time to live my life these days, much less write about it, but I certainly didn't want the Tech shooting post to be the last thing on my blog, and if I do decide to give it up, I'll say goodbye first.

Anyhow, here's a quick synopsis of what I've been up to since my last post:

1) I went down to Miami for a few days for a work conference.

2) I got a promotion at work. I now run the copy desk at the paper. Pretty cool and a great challenge. It also means a lot of work and long days. We also just launched a major redesign of the paper, which has meant even longer days lately. But that'll settle down in a week or two.

3) I was one of the lucky few in attendance for Shutterbug's wedding on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

4) I finally mowed my lawn and pulled the weeds in my backyard that were, seriously, taller than me.

5) Got a great visit from an old college friend, which included a search for 2-cent stamps that finally led us to the Postal Museum in D.C.

6) I started growing a goatee, as you can see by the new mugshot. I just felt like a change. I was a little skeptical of it working at first, but I'm starting to like it.

So that's the Reader's Digest of the update on my life for now. Just wanted to let you all know I'm still kicking. I'll try to be more in touch soon.

A long, rough day

What can you possibly say?

Days like today just shouldn't happen. Ever.

Cool clips: My Humps parody

Although I rather loathe the Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps" song, Alanis Morrisette's parody of it is pretty darned funny.

Spring cleaning my life

It's been an expensive weekend, but in a good way, I suppose. I spent most of yesterday afternoon shopping -- one of my semiannual clothes shopping experiences. I asked a fashion-savvy friend to accompany me and got a bunch of new shirts, pants, shoes, etc. I also donated a bunch of clothes I don't wear often or that I really never should have been wearing. Those familiar with my wardrobe will be happy to know that the pleated shorts are gone, and as soon as my shoes arrive on Tuesday, I'll stop wearing gym shoes every day. (Incidentally, Endless.com is a pretty good deal for buying shoes. They have a huge variety of shoes you can check out, some pretty good sale prices, free overnight shipping and free return shipping. So if something doesn't fit, you just send it back and they send you a different size -- all for free!)

I did not just get excited about shoes, though. Let's be clear about that.

Anyhow, I got some nice shirts and a jacket for when I want to look extra spiffy. Who knows? It could be the start of a whole new fashionable me.

Today, I bought a new washer and dryer, which will arrive on Wednesday. I'm looking forward to having an energy-efficient set and being able to dry a load of clothes in less than 2 hours.

I also finally did my taxes tonight, not that I was procrastinating or anything.

So it was an expensive weekend, but a productive one. On Wednesday, I head to Miami for a few days for a copy editors convention. I suspect my fun is more likely to come from cracking grammar jokes than from hitting the clubs, but I'll let you know when I get back.

A very weird day

The strangeness began when I was making lunch before work and suddenly something big and buzzy was flying around my head. I swatted at it to get it to go away before stepping back and realizing there was a yellow jacket in my kitchen. So I grabbed a fly swatter and gave it a choice: It could either get on to the fly swatter and I could carry it outside and it could fly away, or I could smack it to death. Fortunately, it was an obliging insect and crawled onto the fly swatter, I took it outside and we amicably parted ways.

Five minutes later, I was walking out the door when I discovered a dead duckling on my doorstep. It was all cute and furry. And dead. Luckily it didn't look like it had been mauled or anything, it just looked like it had sort of keeled over there. But I knew I had to do something about that because it would for sure freak The Roommate out. She already thinks the waterfowl in the area are out to get her. I feared this would be seen as a "Godfather"-type move: "See? If this is what we'll do to one of our own, think of what we'll do to you ..."

So I got the small snow shovel I keep in the trunk of my car and picked up the dead duck. It seemed unceremonious to toss him in the garbage can and I don't have a lot of foliage in the front yard, but I managed to hide him under the leaves of the one small plant that is there. Of course, a friend later pointed out that it will begin to reek as it decomposes and probably attract all manner of creatures I do not want to attract, so tomorrow morning before The Roommate awakens, I will give it a burial at sea in the pond behind my house. It seems only fitting for a webbed creature.

So then I get to work and discover that our bathrooms now come with Muzak. I walked into the restroom and stopped, thinking somehow I had taken a wrong turn into an Olive Garden. Exactly who was clamoring for elevator music while they peed that we went to the trouble -- and cost -- of installing this system? (While two of the four urinals are out of order, incidentally.)

It baffles my mind.

A moving story

I know I've been neglecting my blog readers the past couple of months, and I apologize for that. Work has been crazy busy, but I'll try to do better. Let's start by rewinding a month to when I made the big move from apartment to townhouse.

Because we were going to move both me and my roommate, I rented the biggest U-Haul -- the 26-footer -- to make sure we'd have enough room for all of our stuff. Now, I know 26 feet sounds big, but the diagram on the Web site should really have a little person or something to show relative size. Because the morning of moving day, after I filled out all the paperwork and got the keys, I walked outside to find I had rented a big rig. It ran on diesel, had a cab I had to climb up into and a huge, horizontal wheel like you see on a bus.

For those of you who don't know, I normally drive a small, two-door Saturn.

I was in a little over my head.

I got to Roommate's apartment without incident and managed to park it on the street because they had saved a sizable spot, thankfully. About a dozen of us loaded everything up quickly and we headed to my apartment. I backed the big rig up and would have run into the neighbor's car, were it not for Roommate's boyfriend, who warned me with inches to spare.
Whew.

The rest of the move went without incident, both the loading and unloading. We finished in about four hours overall. Then I went to take the U-Haul back, feeling confident in my ability to handle the monster I had rented (although rightly so, as we just barely fit everything in it).

Of cousre, hubris is always my downfall.

I pulled into the U-Haul parking lot and considered just pulling into the diagonal spot next to another large U-Haul truck. But it was parked facing the opposite way, and so I thought, well I'll just pull around and park it facing the same direction -- piece of cake.

It would be my fatal mistake.

Trying to make the turn and park next to the other truck, I got stuck on the back corner of the other U-Haul. The only way to get out of it was to keep going and scrape the entire side of my U-Haul against the back corner of the other U-Haul. It was the most painful few minutes of my life. Especially when I saw the guy who had rented me the U-Haul behind me, no doubt wondering what the hell I was doing.

I immediately hopped out and apologized profusely.

"You can't make a turn that sharp in something that big!" he said -- advice that would have been immensely helpful had it been given a few minutes prior.

He got into the U-Haul to straighten it out so he could inspect the damage better. It was scraped along the side and a side reflector was busted.

Luckily, karma was on my side and he graciously told me not to worry about it. It had been pretty scratched up when I rented it, but he was still far nicer than he should have been.

That was pretty much the only traumatic experience of the move. It took me awhile to get anything unpacked because I was hardly home. My room is still largely in shambles, and I haven't had a chance to hang pictures or do much in the way of decorating, but it's getting there. I'll let you know when I get it finished.

There have been some minor home-repair projects since I've moved in. I built a couple of shelves for a kitchen cabinet to make better use of the space. This involved buying a jigsaw and cutting wood, which made me feel very manly. And I still have all my fingers -- certainly a plus. I may end up buying some new appliances, too -- a fridge, washer and dryer. But we'll see.

Overall, I'm still a big fan of the place. Once I finish unpacking and take care of some things here and there, it'll really feel like home.

Cool clips: YouVote

Nope, I'm not dead. It's just been a busy past month with all the moving and work, and I'm just now starting to unbury myself. I'll tell more stories later this week, but in the meantime, YouTube is holding voting this week for its own awards. You can check out the nominations and vote here.

Cool clips: Illusion of beauty

I thought this was interesting. And they say ads give us a false sense of attainable beauty ... can't imagine why.

Sorry for the lack of posting lately. I've been busy with work during the week and busy packing this weekend before next week's move. There's a lot to be done before then, so don't be surprised if I don't post much or at all, but I'm sure I'll have plenty of exciting stories in a week or so once I've got a new house, a roommate and wi-fi (because until I get the latter set up, you won't be hearing from me at all). Happy Presidents Day!

Cool clips: A very Buffy "Office"

I could have gone with a clip commemorating Valentine's Day this week ... but nah. Joss Whedon directed Thursday's episode of "The Office," so you should totally check that out. Plus it's just an awesomely hilarious show.

Work stuff is beginning to get a little less crazy, but now I've got to get packing before I move at the end of the month. I spent this past weekend purging a lot (not in the anorexic way, in the spring cleaning way). Old magazines, papers that had piled up -- all gone. Or close to being gone. And I've got about half of my Christmas cards sent out. So woohoo!

As part of my cleaning, you'll find a few new blogs linked to the right, along with another cool site -- Bug Designs, which is run by a friend who creates personalized cards and other stationery, so check it out.

Cool clips: Super Bowl ads

To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with any of the ads this year, but this one was pretty good. If you want to see the others, and vote for your favorite, you can view and rank them over on YouTube.

Taking the plunge (but not in the marital sense)

Well, I did the Polar Plunge this afternoon.

My training began a few weeks ago when I was up in D.C. and stood outside of Circuit City with some friends from college to buy a Wii (Nintendo's latest gaming console and pronounced "we," for those not in the know). We started standing in line at 8:30 in the morning in the freezing cold for 2 or more hours. I hadn't originally planned on buying a Wii for a while, much less doing something stupid for one. But Aaron really wanted one so we all went, and as dumb as it might sound to say, "I stood in a line in the cold in the early morning to buy a Wii," it sounds a lot stupider to say you went through all of that to watch someone ELSE buy a Wii. So we endured the cold and now I own a Wii. You can read the full Gig story here.

Anyhow, since then, my training has consisted of ... well, not really thinking about it. We all met for brunch this morning and then headed out to the beach where we wandered around and looked at all the other crazies. I was dressed as Superman, of course.

To round out the superheroes, we also had Catwoman, Wonder Woman and "Ghetto Aquaman" (as he put it), although all of us in the group that were plunging dressed up in some form or another. I got my picture taken a lot because who doesn't want to get their picture taken with Superman? So that was pretty cool. Wonder Woman got that a lot, too, as did Catwoman some. And true to the running joke in the comic book world, no one paid much attention to Aquaman.

The temperature was in the low 40s and it was pretty windy, but it was sunny, which helped. When it finally came time for the plunge, they corralled us all like cows to the slaughter and we went into the water. I would have preferred to have been able to run in and just dive under, but there were so many people (last year, they had more than 3,000; I would guess it was a similar number this year), that wasn't really feasible. So it was sort of a slow death march to the water -- just with a lot more whooping, yelling and splashing. But I did a quick wade up to my chest (they told us not to go all the way under so they could tell if people were drowning), splashed around for a bit and came out.

And then I ran back to where our stuff was to get a dry towel.

It was invigorating to say the least. The cold water really takes your breath away but after you dry off and get changed into warm clothes, it's not so bad. Granted, I'm doing the Polar Plunge in southern Virginia; there are much colder places to do this sort of thing that are a lot more hardcore. But it was a pretty darned fun day overall and I'm glad I did it. I'm already thinking of ways to do it even bigger and better next year.

For more of the photos, just click on the one above. Thanks to everyone who lent their support and well wishes.

Cool clip: Drone

This week's cool clip is just audio. The San Francisco Chronicle has started a podcast of some of its more ... interesting calls. Those of you who work in the newspaper business will love this. Those of you who don't -- yes, this guy is fairly typical as far as the types of calls and e-mails a newspaper often gets. We bring out the crazies.

Enjoy the clip here.

Speaking of cool things, this guy's endeavor to create ice climbing walls in Iowa is pretty freakin' awesome.

Operators are standing by

So I'll be taking part in the Polar Plunge next weekend. I'll be leaping into cold water, probably dressed as Superman, although that depends on me having enough time to pull together a costume between now and then.

So why am I mentioning this, other than so you can look forward to the photos? Well, part of doing the Plunge is raising money for Special Olympics. I apologize for asking about this so late, but if anyone is interested in donating to the cause, I'm accepting donations until Saturday. (So you'll have to get them in the mail pretty quickly.) Checks should be made out to Special Olympics Virginia; if you don't know my mailing address, just shoot me an e-mail. Any amount would be appreciated.

Sorry to bug you all, and especially to do it on such short notice, but thanks for listening. And even if you don't donate, I'll gladly take your well wishes and positive thoughts that it'll be a warm day.

A cool clip that's hot, hot, hot!

(Sorry this is late. I was out of town until late Sunday and Blogger was having issues yesterday.)

Much like the Hoff's music video, this is so awful it's awesome... (Appalachian State is in North Carolina in case this totally sells you on going there.)

Beware bunnies and dragons

Two things that have recently amused me ...

One I saw on a bumper sticker the other day:
"Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with ketchup."

(So true. And so wise.)

The other is this picture of a gigantor bunny:

How totally awesome is he?!?

A house, not yet a home

Front of house
Originally uploaded by commonbriguy.
Sorry this has taken awhile -- it's been a busy past week, partly because of housing-related things, partly because of car troubles (but that's a blog post for another time). At any rate, you can go here to see a quick virtual tour of my new townhouse. I took the pictures the first time we looked at it and just did it quickly, so they're kind of dark and are really only a partial look at the place, but it'll give you an idea. I'll take better pictures later once I move in.

Cool clip: Let's go to the mall!

"How I Met Your Mother" is back tonight after it's holiday hiatus. In the show's honor, let's relive one of the funniest things from the first half of the season -- the music video showing Robin's brief tenure as a Canadian pop star.

My precious

Because I started off my tale of house hunting with a "Lord of the Rings" theme, I had planned on continuing that when I found a house that I liked and talking about how it was mine ... my precious ... (etc., etc.) while I decided on an offer and waited for a response.

I'm sure it would have been hi-larious.

However ... I've skipped past that part and am now a future homeowner. I'll explain more when I've got time, but I found a place I really liked on Thursday, I made an offer today and they accepted it earlier tonight. We close the deal next month, and it's a totally sweet place.

I'm gonna have my very own townhouse!

Woohoo!

Warm fuzzies

If you want to read a really nice, uplifting story about someone who makes you want to be a better human being, check out this article.

Tuesday, January 02, 2007

So you say you want a reso-lu-tio-on, oh yeah?

OK, here goes. My goals for 2007:

1) Buy a house.
This is sort of a gimme since I'm already looking and all. But I need to close the deal.

2) Learn to play the guitar.
Yes, this is a holdover from last year. But this year, I'm gonna do it. Really.

3) Get outside my comfort zone more.
I'm going to explore the area more -- try new restaurants and new shops and do some uncharacteristic things, such as the Polar Plunge, which I'm forming a team for in February. Maybe do some traveling to new places.

4) Be better organized; procrastinate less.
I'm already a pretty well-organized person. But I have decided that between my workload and things in my personal life, I've got to step it up a notch. Don't put off till tomorrow what can be done today. Try to stay on top of everything; file papers immediately; etc. Be better about e-mailing also falls under this category. And create a budget and a daily schedule that includes habits I want to form -- flossing, the gym, reading a good book, etc. -- and stick to it.

5) Get back in the habit of going to the gym regularly.
Another holdover from last year. The goal -- three to five times a week, preferably five on a Sunday through Thursday schedule, leaving Fridays open to see movies before work and Saturdays to relax. Also, I need to try the Y's tai chi class.

6) Be healthier in general.

Try to eat better, cook more and be more active. (While still getting in some quality video game time, mind you.) Part of what will help will be to finally get my bike fixed so I can ride it.

7) Get my Christmas cards for 2006 out.
And maybe I should resolve to get my 2007 cards out before Christmas this year.

Maybe.

Cool clip: New Year's Edition

Happy New Year! (This is in London)
